Design Ideas for Princess Theme
Mock up of a themed kids room - Princess Artist's rendering of a room with the Princess theme.

Every little girl should be treated like a special princess

This is a theme all about expressing your love, affection and admiration for your little girl. It is of course a fact that a parent's expressions of love, approval, acceptance, and appreciation are the foundations of a child's self confidence. And self confidence is an important ingredient in a willingness to socialize, explore, try new things and so learn and excel.

There are many types of princess, those surrounded by the excitement of magic and myth, folk lore and legend, and there are those engaged in more courtly pursuits of languages and travel, music, dance and games.

Stimulation Levels

Depending on the temperament and age of the child one can design a room with more or less stimulation and complexity. A child who thrives on sensory input will enjoy and benefit from a room relatively full of sounds, imagery and color.

A child who is happiest playing quietly, who focuses easily and is able to retain focus for somewhat extended periods, is more likely to enjoy and benefit from lower levels of sensory inputs, less and calmer imagery and more muted tones.

More active rambunctious girls will enjoy an environment rich in the drama of dragons and princes, magic mirrors, spells, potions and wizards

Quieter princesses will be amply engaged in images of topiaried gardens, rose and herb gardens, musical instruments, animals and perhaps horse riding.

One might place more importance on stories of princesses, their detail and eloquence. Bring the characters into the child's room in the form of murals, pictures, posters, stencils, furniture, soft furnishings, lamps, rugs, light switch plates, books and toys. This detailed interest in her environment often stimulates a child to do better in school as she will already have been taught to use her sense of awareness, imagination and creativity.

Be aware that the quieter the child is the more sensitive she may be to even the slightest suggestion of dark or menacing concepts, so keep it light, fresh and friendly.

Color Schemes

Color too is important with regard to stimulation levels. Bright colors may increase activity levels, and therefor may easily overstimulate any child. Overwhelming a quiter child and potentially making a super active child even more hyper.

Dark colors too have an intensity that may overwhelm if used to excess. However both bright and saturated dark colors can be used to positive effect if incorporated judiciously, and in combination with balancing tones and muted foils.

Infant: Pastel Blue, Pastel Green, Pastel Pink, Fuscia and Cream

Toddler: Pastel Pink, Fuscia Pink, Hot Pink, Ivory and Yellow

Child: Pink, Purple, Sage Green, Baby Blue and Ivory

Teen: Royal Purple, Silver and Gold, Red, Black and White

Interests and Preferences:

Those interested in animals and the outdoors may enjoy the classic childhood pleasures of a rocking horse and images of rolling hills and paddocks, stallions, sheep, cows dogs etc. Those more engaged by tales of intrigue and mystery may prefer images of friendly dragons knights in shining armor and fairy godmothers.

Opportunities for Exploration and Learning:

Imaginative travel with her parents or chaperons to her countries 'dominions and colonies', trying new food, ways of life and foreign culture. Learning the languages of these far flung parts of the empire. It can be made part of the fun of learning to enjoy learning, and to behave with manners and dignity when it is called for!

Reassuring and Comforting:

Secure in the knowledge that she is loved and has a pretty room of her own full of exciting or interesting images and objects, the Little Princess will always have fond memories of this period of her life.

Feng Shui:

Frogs are considered to bring good fortune, so place two ceramic, wooden or toy frogs just inside her bedroom door, facing into the room. Cultivating metal and fire energies in a room full of soft furnishings and imagery of countryside, We suggest a metal bed, perhaps a four poster or maybe a picture of a friendly fire breathing dragon. When she is old enough it is a good idea to place a beautiful plant in a child's bedroom and encourage her to look after it.

Budget versus Time and Talent

To Make a Faux Fourposter Bed

First Create the 'Pelmet'

Step 1 Directly above each corner of the bed, screw a large heavy weight cup hook into the ceiling, making sure that it is very secure.
Step 2 Measure the length and width of the bed, add these measurements together and add two inches for seams.
Step 3 Using the fabric of your choice - 36inches wide cotton, tulle, net or satin fabric, first cut fabric in half lengthways,
Step 4 Then join the ends together with seams so that you have one continuous piece, and hem both sides
Step 5 Placing the bunched fabric along the outer perimeter of the bed so that it forms a matching rectangle, catch each corner with a 20 inch long ribbon or tape;
Step 6 Tie the ribbons with little bows and hook onto the cup hooks on ceiling, bows facing downwards.

Next Create the Drapes:

Step 1 Using either the same fabric again or a co-ordinating fabric i.e. net with satin or cotton with tulle, plain with pattern etc. Cut four panels of fabric (floor to ceiling lengths), allowing for hems top and bottom, (preferably using 36 inch wide fabric).

Step 2 Hem along lengths, tops and bottom.

Step 3 Thread and gather the top hems with tape or elastic, tie or sew tight.

Step 4 Hook tapes onto the four ceiling hooks, on the inside of the 'pelmet'.

Step 5 Either allow to float free or tie with ribbons about 4 feet from the floor.

For a more luxurious / elaborate look, line both the pelmet and the drapes and entwine garlands of her favorite silk flowers and ribbons around or along pelmets and or drapes.
